Following the dissolution of the House of Representatives on 10 April 1974 and the subsequent general election, the Select Committee on Road Safety was re-appointed on 10 July 1974 as a Standing Committee to inquire into and report on:
(a) the main causes of the present high level of the road toll in
Australia;
(b) the most effective means of achieving greater road safety in
Australia;
(c) the particular aspects of the problem to which those concerned
with road safety could most advantageously direct their efforts;
and
(d) the economic cost to the community of road accidents in
Australia in terms of -
(i) material damage,
(ii) loss of man hours and earning capacity, and
(iii) cost of treatment of accident victims.
The Committee's resolution of appointment provides that the Committee have power to consider and make use of the evidence and the records of the House of Representatives Select Committees on Road Safety appointed in previous Parliaments (Passenger Motor Vehicle Safety - Report of the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Road Safety, May 1976. AGPS Canberra, 1976).
The House of Representatives Standing Committee on Road Safety changed title on 27 February 1985 to the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Transport Safety following the opening of the 34th Parliament on 21 February 1985.
This agency has been revised as a result of the Parliamentary Committee Survey of 1987. The Standing Committee on Road Safety was broadened in title to The Standing Committee on Transport Safety. The Committee was already dealing with matters such as aviation safety and sports aviation.
The House of Representatives Standing Committee on Transport Safety ceased on 4 June 1987 following the closing of the 34th Parliament on 4-5 June 1987.Historical agency addressParliament House, Canberra
