In 1929 the Commonwealth Radium Laboratory was established as part of the Natural Philosophy Laboratory within the University of Melbourne to act as the custodian of all Commonwealth radium and to ensure its safe and proper use. The construction and repair of radium apparatus and the carrying out of research into problems of treatment and protection.
In 1935 it was decided to extend the activities of the Commonwealth Radium Laboratory to include the investigation of the physical problems of radiation therapy generally and to appoint additional staff. The Laboratory was renamed the Commonwealth X-Ray
