The Department of Primary Industry [II] was renamed from the Department of Agriculture on 22 December 1975. The Department's role was to provide advice to the Minister on primary industry policy issues and implement and administer approved Government programs for primary products. Up until 1985 the Victorian Office administered Central Office functions for dairy and fruit but it is not certain when this outposting commenced.
The Department was abolished by the changes of July 1987 which provided for the transfer of virtually all functions/responsibilities of Primary Industry [II] to the new Department of Primary Industries and Energy.
