The National Mapping Section (CA 1227) of the Department of the Interior existed from 1951-1956 and was succeeded by the Division of National Mapping August 1956.
According to the Commonwealth Gazette (No. 47 of 16 August 1956, p 2527) the position of Director of National Mapping was created and the function of mapping was transferred to the Department of National Development. This followed the abolition of all positions in the National Mapping Section of the Department of the Interior
(Commonwealth Gazette No. 43 of 9 August 1956, p.2459), including of Director of the Section.
The Melbourne Office of the National Mapping Division was first headed by a Chief Topographical Surveyor, Mr. G.R.L. Rimington (Federal Guide, 1957 p.156). By 1967 the Melbourne Office was headed by an Assistant Director. (Commonwealth Directory, 1967 p.119).
With the administrative change of July 1987, the national mapping function was assumed by CA 6717, Surveying and Land Information Group, Victoria (from 1988 the Australian Surveying and Land
