The Senate Select Committee on Road Safety was appointed on 14 May 1959, as proposed by Senator Anderson (NSW), to inquire into and report upon means of improving road safety in Australia. The Committee consisted of Senators Anderson, Aylett, McMavies, O'Byrne, Sir Neil O'Sullivan, Scott, Sheehan and Wade. Senator Aylett resigned from the Committee in September 1959, and was replaced by Senator Drury.
The Committee met and heard evidence in every State, and the date for presenting its report (originally 31 December 1959) was extended twice. The report was presented on 21 September 1960 (printed in Parliamentary Papers 1960-1961, Vol I, p 241 ff) and the Committee disbanded.
The records produced by the Committee included papers on Committee administration, correspondence and submissions, as well as background material, transcripts of evidence, and report material.
