RAAF Headquarters, Australian Force Vietnam was established at Fairbairn in May 1966 and was then transferred to Saigon. This agency
which at times was called RAAF Element or RAAF Component, Headquarters Australian Force Vietnam formed part of CA 5969, Headquarters Australian Force Vietnam, which consisted of executive representatives from the Army, Navy and Air Force.
The Commander RAAF Element Vietnam (COMRAAFV), who exercised single service command of all RAAF units in Vietnam, was also Deputy Commander Australian Force Vietnam.

After a year, COMRAAFV was supported by a staff which numbered just four oficers and three airmen. By March 1968, this number had grown to twenty officers and seven airmen.
The component units of the RAAF Element were initially based at Vung Tau, Vietnam, and consisted of:

In August 1971, the Australian Government decided to withdraw its forces from Vietnam. By 29 February 1972, all RAAF units and personnel stationed in Vietnam were returned to Australia following disbandment procedures.
