Responsibility for Aboriginal matters administered by the Medical Service, Health and Aboriginals Branch (CA 1077) passed to a newly created Native Affairs Branch of the Northern Territory Administration in 1939.
Due to the wartime position the Branch moved south to Alice Springs in 1942. It is thought that the Branch moved back to Darwin in 1946, and that at the same time a permanent local office of the Branch was established in Alice Springs (see CA 1117).
Due to changes within the Department of the Interior Structure, the Branch was technically a Section between 1941 and 1951.
The title of the Native Affairs Branch was changed to Welfare Branch in 1955.
