This series comprises of Army Headquarters correspondence files, 1936 to 1945, with a secret classification. They cover a wide variety of subjects. Files were raised in accordance with a subject based numbering system, with the first number indicating the general subject, the second number a sub-division of the general subject, and the third number
being the registration number of the individual document or file.
The majority of the files have been assigned '401' as the secondary number, however 402 to 403 have also been used.
The base paper of each file was registered with a square 'secret' stamp, subsequent correspondence being allocated the same number within a round 'secret' stamp.
This system seems to have been abandoned in later years with each paper being allocated the pertinent file number in the upper right corner only. These records are part of the series, CRS B1841 Secret correspondence files, but have not been physically converted to CRS B1841.
The records in this series should be called for by the MP729/6 number.
