Series note
This series consists of a Kalamazoo brand strip index showing the names of suspected war criminals either sought or in custody. The index sources appears to be from various listings issued by investigating authorities, including the Australian Military Forces, the United Nations War Crimes Commission and the Far Eastern and Pacific Sub-Commission. The index usually provides the individuals names (or nicknames), nationality and/or rank, and a reference to the source of the listing (eg SCAP 1). Nationalities in the index are mainly Japanese but also include Germans, Indians and Koreans. The majority of the strips are yellow though some are green in color. It is not clear whether this colour difference has any significance. The strips had been removed from their casement prior to transfer to the Australian Archives and sections wrapped with ribbon, making access difficult. In 1999 the strips were pasted onto acid free cards and placed in folders. The original alphabetical order of the index was maintained. However a single number order was imposed for each of the folders containing portions of the index. Access to this index is now possible.
