This series consists of case files which were raised for individuals or families entering Australia seeking permanent and temporary residence. These may include student; visitors; immigration agents; migrants; people departing Australia voluntarily or through deportation; people seeking temporary employment, permission or resident status; certificates of exemption; applications for naturalization or landing permits; providing guarantees of maintenance and accommodation; applying for admission of a friend or relative. Some files contain administration and policy files for the agency for the period from 1946 to 1983. Many official forms, interdepartmental and individual correspondence are included. Some files contain alien report forms or medical reports and some cover aircraft and ships passenger lists/nominal rolls.It should be noted that some files are not described accurately on the consignment lists as the sponsors name is shown and not the actual applicants name.

From 2001 the National Archives of Australia only brings into custody records deemed RNA (retain as a national archive). Many records dealing with temporary entry/residence do not meet that criteria. J25 case files consist of records which show that the migrant has either been granted permanent residence or citizenship
