The Canberra Services Branch, located within the two Departments of the Interior was involved in the following service activities:
transport;
parks and gardens, including recreation grounds, negotiations with sporting organisations for additions to or new facilities;
rent collection;
cleaning and 'watching' of office buildings;
letting of public halls;
management and control of swimming pool;
lifesaving patrols in rivers;
garbage collection.
In addition, the Branch was responsible for the administration of the following Australian Capital Territory Ordinances and associated regulations:

No 43 of 1936- ; Hawker's Ordinance, 1936-1968 No 45 of 1936- ; Motor Traffic Ordinance, 1936-1968 No 25 of 1937- ; Education Ordinance, 1937-1966
There was a variation in the Establishment of the Department of the Interior [II] in 1950 which resulted in the abolition of both the Canberra Services and Civic (ACT) Administration Branches, with most of the functions of the former being inherited by the newly-created ACT Services Branch. The new organisation took effect on 2 July 1951.
