FUNCTION AND CONTENT

This series consists of forty four brown visidex folders with blue  spine labels bearing the title: Third Gorton Ministry - Cabinet Submissions, together with volume number and range of submission numbers.

Each folder contains submissions arranged in numerical order with their related decision(s) attached. A number of submissions to Cabinet were subsequently withdrawn and not considered by Cabinet but are however contained in this series (with no associated decision documents) and described as such on the item level database. In some cases there are covering notes for submissions withdrawn or dealt with outside Cabinet for submissions not held in this series.

As with previous Ministries since 1956, submissions were considered either by the full Ministry, an 'inner' Cabinet, or Cabinet committee.  Decisions made by the Ministry are indicated by the suffix 'M'; those made by a Cabinet committee by the appropriate letter symbol suffix, eg 'GA' (General Administrative Committee); and those made by the 'inner' Cabinet do not have any suffix.  A list of Cabinet committee abbreviations is given in the descriptive note for series A5873.
