This series consists of five brown visidex folders with white spine labels bearing the title: Eighth Menzies Ministry - Cabinet Files and the volume number and range of contents.
Decisions are arranged in a single number sequence, one per page per decision (or more if necessary). A suffix is added to the decision
number to distinguish between the three categories of the decision making operative at that time.
- The First category was The Ministry which was the broadest
category, comprising all ministers, and its decisions
bear an 'M' suffix
- The second category was an inner Cabinet of senior Ministers,
with occasional co-options. There was no letter suffix added
to its decisions numbers.
- The third category was the Committees of the Cabinet -
groups of Ministers who dealt with matters affecting their
portfolios.
The letter symbol for the Committee is added to the Decision
Number to identify its decisions eg. (LEG) for Legislation
Committee
Each decision bears the number, title, submission number where
applicable and text of the decision. It is stamped as a certified true copy with a signature stamp of the Secretary to the Cabinet.
No parallel series of submissions was maintained contemporaneously. Submissions were placed on files in CRS A4940, Cabinet files, 'C' single number series, 1958-1967. Between 1983 and 1985 two artifical sets of submissions were copied and assembled by the Cabinet Secretariat(CRS A5827).
