FUNCTION AND CONTENT
This series consists of eight brown Visidex folders with typed spine labels: "Cabinet submissions 4th Menzies Ministry Spare Set
19/12/49 - 11/5/51". In fact this is the only set extant in the Cabinet Secretariat, and its date range is 20 December 1949 - March 1951. The volumes contain, in order from top to bottom, submissions and some notes of decisions, mainly in the form of memoranda to ministers from the Secretary to Cabinet. Attached to many submissions are supporting papers in the form of reports, plans etc.
USING THE SERIES
System of arrangement and control
The submissions are registered in a single number sequence, letter suffixes being added to control subsequent submissions on a similar or related topic.
Relationships with other records
In addition to the control records (CRS A5073, A5075) a partial register of agenda is extant within CRS A4638, covering agenda 1- 74A.
Agenda noted as missing in the inventory for this series were located on files in CRS A4940. These missing agenda now form a separate copy volume of CRS A4940, identified as CRS A4940/XR1, Volume 1, at the front of which appears a list of the missing agenda papers with a cross reference to the files in CRS A4940 from which the agenda were copied.
Copies
A reference copy, made by the Cabinet Office, was transferred to Archives' custody in 1980 for public reference purposes. Volume 6 of this reference set contains copies of the original volumes 6 and 7. Reference volume 7 corresponds to original volume 8, and reference volume 8 corresponds to original volume 9.
