Summary heading

SP83/11 Inwards crew and passenger lists for Australian ports

Function and purpose

This series consists of passenger lists (form 12) and crew lists (form 23) of vessels which arrived at Australian ports.  Most lists are for the Port of Sydney.  Some lists for Fremantle, Adelaide, Melbourne, Newcastle and Brisbane are included.

Details given on the passenger  list are: ship name, ship master, port arrived at, port departed from, date of arrival, name of agents; passenger name, age, nationality, race, sex, adult or child, calling or occupation, place of shipment, remarks (usually left blank).

Details given on the crew list are: ship name, ship master, port arrived at, port departed from, date of arrival, name of agents; crew member name, crew member number on articles, nationality, race, port of shipment, remarks (usually left blank).

In 1923 Form 23 under the Immigration Restriction Act became Form P2 under the Navigation Act. Form P2 offered more detailed information about passengers. Included at the end of some months are statistical charts of ship’s movements and lists of passengers not required to pass education tests.

Using the series

As a general rule this series lists only civilian passengers and crew going through customs. Troopships of soldiers are not found in these passenger lists as they did not pass through customs. World War One troopship ‘nominal rolls’ can be found in record series AWM31, ‘Troopship passenger lists,’ held by the Australian War Memorial.

A fuller set of this list appears to be held by New South Wales State Records.

This series does not appear to have lists after February 1922.
