This series contains two sets of bankruptcy indexes, known as the 'blue' and 'red' registers respectively. Both sets of indexes contain large handwritten volumes compiled between 1938 and 1941, listing in alphabetical order residents of New South Wales who were declared bankrupt or insolvent in the years 1842 to 1928, when this function was administered by the Colony and State. Each register lists the name, address and occupation of the bankrupt or insolvent, as well as the date of sequestration, the case number and, if applicable, the date of annulment.
The blue index contains 18 registers which combine to form the 'Insolvency Index'. This index covers the period February 1842 to December 1887. The red index, also known as the 'Bankruptcy Index' is comprised of 21 volumes. These volumes cover the period 1 January 1888 to 31 July 1928.
