Description of series:
Forms are in bound volumes except for the final two months of 1964 which are jacketed. Initially the records are Passengers' List forms (referred to in the Merchant Shipping Act, 1894, Section 311). Entries are made under Ship's Name, Master's Name, Tons Register, Where Bound, signed and dated by the Master. Passenger details are entered under Port of Embarkation, Name, Married/Single/Male/Female, Children between 1 and 12/Male/Female, State whether English, Scotch, Irish, or Foreigners, and Port at which Passengers have contracted to land. The few entries under Profession, Occupation, etc., where made, are variously by accommodation class (saloon, 2nd, steerage, etc.), or tourist, rarely by actual occupation.
From November 1923 the forms are titled Passenger List - Outgoing Passengers (form P.-1.) under the Commonwealth Navigation Act 1912-1920, and as amended. These forms are completed in more detail, including ship's port of registry and steamship line, and passenger entries include occupation, age last birthday, married or single, country of last permanent residence, nationality (British or Alien), race (specifying country), country of intended permanent residence, and contract ticket number.
