Summary heading Function and purpose This collection of video tapes provides a visible record of all aspects of Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions (ANARE) life and operations. It provides an insight into, and a record of, conditions experienced at differing periods in time and at different times of the year, the equipment used and the progress made in the development of stations in the Antarctic, sub-Antarctic and Southern Ocean region. It includes scenes, persons, animals, birds, objects and events from the expeditions. This series contains audiovisual formats. It is a collection of video tapes created by the Australian Antarctic Division from 16mm film footage which is also held by the National Archives of Australia in series P2677. As audiovisual formats are either redundant or susceptible to deterioration, some items have been copied to ensure their preservation. Preservation copying involves the creation of preservation, duplicating and reference copies.
