This series consists of the main correspondence files for the CSIRO Division of Fisheries during the period 1940 - 1992.
Records in this series cover all activities of the Division, both scientific and administrative, although in the case
of scientific data it generally records the establishment, operations and administration of scientific research rather
than actual research data.
Some documents which were sensitive, confidential or personal have been maintained in CRS P2777, Chief's documents on
sensitive and confidential matters, single number series, instead of being placed on files in this series.
The series has an unusual system of arrangement and control, known in CSIRO as the "Knuckey system", after its inventor.
The aim of the system was to establish unique numbers for individual case files. The system is widely used by other CSIRO
agencies, and consists of double-letter prefixes followed by multiple numbers. The double letter-prefix runs from "AA"
to "ZZ" with the first letter representing a major subject or functional area. The second letter represents the subject
or functional area. The prefixes are followed by multiple numbers which represent further refinements of subject, function
or records class.
This system of arrangement and control was used continuously by the Division until 1992 when an annual single number
arrangement was adopted. This series was previously registered as CRS P1393, P1394, P1395, P1396, and P1397 all of which
have subsequently been cancelled.
This series was formerly CSIRO Archives Series 370.
