Series note

This series consists of files and log books which record operations and events at each Antarctic Station for the duration of each expedition. The stations covered are Heard Island 1947 - 1963, Macquarie Island 1948 -, Antarctica 1948 - 1954, Mawson 1954 - , Davis 1957 - , Wilkes (replaced by Casey in 1969) 1957 - 1969, Casey 1969 - , and other temporary field locations.

Matters reported on the files include shipping, equipment, working methods, topography, conditions, personnel, specific field trips and station building services such as plumbing, carpentry, electrical, etc.

The files may include black and white photographs depicting station life and activities, large maps/charts (folded inside files), handwritten notes and sketches as well as typed reports.

Reports vary in content and detail - some station OICs and expeditioners compiled more thorough reports than others.

Station log books are in diary format recording daily activities over the period of each expedition.

Following the return of each expedition to Australia, the reports and log books are held in the AAD collections prior to transfer to NAA.

The material may be available in a variety of formats including hard copy, microfiche and digital.

A transfer of records for this series was made by the AAD in 2012 and dates from 1957 - 1999.
