Function and purpose
This series consists of lighthouse station log books for
operations at the lighthouse on Deal
Island. The following
information was regularly recorded:
-
wind direction and force;
-
barometric pressure;
-
temperature;
-
and remarks regarding daily
activities.
Occasionally, additional information was recorded regarding
events on Deal Island. For example, the log book for
1944-1946, contains a map of the graves of four airmen who died in a plane
crash on the island in 1943. It also gives details of visitors to Deal Island
between 1890 and 1926.
Physical characteristics
Bound volumes and paper files with
photocopies of transcribed notes.
System of arrangement and control
The volumes are arranged chronologically by the dates of the
entries within the logs.
Series history
In 2006 a National Archive’s researcher donated a photocopy
of a log book and notes from other log books not in National Archives of Australia
custody. These items were taken into custody by the Archives with each item
clearly labeled as a copy of an original or a transcript from an original
volume.
Disposal history
Records in series P1113 have been sentenced as ‘retain
permanently’ under RDA 1168, entry 4.2.
