Series note
This series consists of minutes of the meetings of the Interim Darwin Reconstruction Commission and later the Darwin Reconstruction Commission, set up to plan, administer and co-ordinate the task of rebuilding the City of Darwin in the aftermath of Cyclone Tracy which passed over the city in the early hours of the 25th December 1974. The Darwin Reconstruction Commission was formally established by and Act of Parliament (Darwin Reconstruction Act 1975) which was assented to on February 28, 1975. The Commissions fundamental objective was "to ensure that, as soon as is reasonably and economically possible, the population of Darwin is adequately and suitably housed and is provided with all necessary community services in an environment compatible with current [1975] standards of urban development, consistent with those required by the Australian Government under it's urban and regional development programmes" (Reference: Parliamentary Papers 1976 Volume 3, page 15) The first meeting of the Interim DRC was held on the 6th January 1975. The first meeting of the Darwin Reconstruction Commission was held on the 10-11th March 1975. The items in the series are entered onto recordsearch at item level and are arranged according to their meeting number (which follow a date order).
