This series comprises secret correspondence files maintained by Army headquarters from 1945 to 1955. The series includes files relating to allowances, appointment of staff, visits by senior staff, committees, personnel, establishment, orders of battle, corps movement overseas, media relations and equipment maintenance.
Files were raised in accordance with a multiple number system by which the first number indicates the general subject, the second number a sub-division of the general subject and the third number, the individual item as it occurs. The majority of the files have been assigned '431' as the secondary number, however 432 to 436 have also been used. The base paper of each file was registered with a square 'secret' stamp, subsequent correspondence being allocated the same number within a round 'secret' stamp. This system seems to have been abandoned in later years with each paper being allocated the pertinent file number in the upper right hand corner only.
Files are held with file covers with the Department of the Army printed along the top. Although the earlier files in the series have the upper right hand corner of each file turned down to reveal the file number written on the top paper, most file numbers are written in the upper right hand corner of the file cover.
The records in MP729/8 are part of Commonwealth Record Series B1848, but have not been physically converted to B1848. They should be requested under the MP729/8 number.
