Series note
This series comprises posters illustrating the necessity for, and methods of wartime camouflage, issued by the British Government and the Australian Department of Home Security. The posters are of varying sizes and include text and diagrams, many demonstrating both correct and incorrect methods of camouflage. Examples of instructions covered include: * garnishing of nets to avoid shadows underneath and along the edges; * concealment when constructing weapon slits and digging pits; * placing supplies and hutted camps to blend with the natural environment; * camouflage of vehicles, including the parking and painting of; * camouflage of aeroplanes to hide the location of aerodromes; * camouflage of the face using leaves; * following fences and hedges, hiding shadows and reflections such as in streams and when clothes are wet; * locating and hiding tracks and creating dummy tracks; Some of the posters comprise slogans such as "Don't expose yourself", "Careless tracks invite attacks" and "Your mistake but they all took the rap". One poster includes a field craft quiz which service personnel could use to test each other. In 2003 the National Archives of Australia imposed a single number system of control on the posters.
