Series note |
This series comprises records relating to internal security during the 1914 - 1918 war. The series includes individual case files to registration of aliens, apprehension, internment, paroling, and repatriation of enemy aliens, apprehension of deserters, suspected spying or disloyalty, offences against War Precautions Regulations or Moratorium Act, applications for naturalization or passports, etc. A few general files deal with such matters as escapees from internment, Geneva Convention, permits for private aeroplane flights or wireless transmitters, illegal use of badges etc.
The system of arrangement is annual single number, from 1919 a 'Y' prefix was added. For 1914 and 1915 files an additional number has been inserted into the control symbol, eg 1914/1/1, 1914/2/1, 1914/3/1, which is believed to relate to subject categories. However it is unclear what the subject categories are.
History Prior/Subsequent to Transfer:
The series was created by Intelligence Section, General Staff, 3rd Military District, and was transferred to custody of Commonwealth Investigation Service in about 1922 or 1923. C.I.S. in a very small number of cases checked the records of individuals concerned for naturalization or immigration purposes on behalf of other departments, but such reference practically ceased within a few years of transfer. Otherwise C.I.S. took no action on the series.
