Summary heading

Photographs of Sir John Kerr at official and private functions

Function and purpose

This series consists of black and white and colour photographic prints of Sir John Kerr, in his role as Governor-General. Mainly taken in the period 1974 to 1977. The photographs are primarily of Sir John Kerr at official and private functions, with other government officials such as Prime Minister the Hon Gough Whitlam or visiting dignitaries.

This series contains a number of photographs of Sir John Kerr’s family, which appear to have been taken before Sir John became the Governor-General. Some were taken while he was Chief Justice of NSW. Also contained in this series are a handful of images that may have been taken by Sir John Kerr himself, while on overseas State Visits in 1975. Only a few of the photographs had annotations on the back, the majority of the subjects and locations pictured are unidentified.

Physical characteristics

The majority of the subjects and locations pictured are unidentified. Pencil annotations on the back of some of the photographs provide information, which has helped to identify some of the prints. These annotations relate to the date, month and year the photograph was taken and the negative number. Where possible these reference numbers have been placed into the alternative control symbol field and copies of these photographs can be found in series A6180 - Photographic negatives and prints, daily single number series.

For protection and ease of retrieval the photographs have been placed in plastic sleeves and envelopes of uniform size.

System of arrangement and control

The photographs were transferred into the National Archives custody with no apparent system of arrangement and control. No chronological order or other logical order could be determined. The National Archives has imposed a single number system to the photographs.

Relationships with other records

There are no control records. Copies of some of the photographs can be found in series A6180 – Photographic negatives and prints, daily single number series.
