Function and purpose
Series M3983 consists of audio and video tapes maintained by the Hon Paul John Keating during his time as Treasurer and later Prime Minister of Australia. The records consist of radio and television interviews, press conferences, speeches and opening ceremonies in Australia and overseas. Paul Keating became the Treasurer for the Hawke Government in 1983; holding the position until 1991. During this time period he implemented a number of economic reforms, including: tax reform; floating the Australian dollar; the introduction of a capital gains tax; and, the deregulation of Australia’s financial sector and airline and telecommunication industries. On 20 December 1991, Mr Keating was sworn in as Australia’s 24th Prime Minister. Prime Minister Keating had an extensive political agenda that included: native title rights for Australia’s indigenous people (following the Mabo High Court decision); furthering Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC); the establishment of the National Training Authority; and, the introduction of a national superannuation scheme. The series include speeches made on a range of subjects to a wide variety of audiences, such as: domestic and international political forums; the National Press Club and television and radio news; business and community groups; and, ‘doorstop’ interviews at a range of locations.
Using the series
This audio-visual series was transferred into archival custody on a range of physical media (audio and video cassette tapes). A single number control system was imposed on the carriers by Archives: range of control symbols [1] - [2272]. The Archives controls audio-visual items on a separate internal system. The intellectual information held in this system is linked to the public interface. The ‘Range of control symbols’ listed in the series registration on the public system reflect the original carriers that made up the series. These numbers are used to manage the series in the in-house system and, consequently, are not visible to the public. Item descriptions on the public website are identified by version record numbers, which were generated by the audio-visual asset management system.
