This series consists of a variety of records that were compiled by Eric Leslie COOK (CP 652) during his employment with the Department of Supply (and Development) and in particular his association with the atomic and long range weapons testing programs conducted in Australia in the late 1940s and 1950s.
The records contain a number of black and white photographs which depict scenes and personalities (civilian and military) who were involved in the tests at Woomera, Maralinga and the Emu Claypan. Some photographs show the mushroom cloud effects of an atomic explosion, while most show people who were directly involved in the tests, such as Sir William Penny. Eric Cook appears in a number of the photographs.
Other records in the series include publications by the "Claypan Press" which were circulated to visitors, and a small number of cartoon illustrations and other mementos relating to the Emu Claypan.
The series also contains a bound volume of black and white photographs taken when Cook accompanied the Minister for Supply, A S Hulme and party to Perth, Talgarno, Broome, Port Hedland, Derby and Yampi Sound in Western Australia in 1959. A few photographs relate to visits overseas conducted by Cook in the 1950s and 1960s to Rome (Italy), London (England) and Florida (USA). The series also contains a few records from the period when Cook acted as secretary to the Chairman of the Commonwealth Development Migration Commission (1928-1931) and a Victorian ministerial delegation to New Zealand (Sir George Gondie and H Pye) which investigated unemployment relief and hospital benefits in 1936.
