Summary heading
Function and purpose
This series contains assorted
unidentified and undated photographs along with newspaper clippings (largely
from unknown sources) collected by Sir Joseph Cook throughout his career. Individual items in the series may date from
about 1900 to 1947 but most probably fall between 1909, when Joseph Cook was
Minister for Defence, and 1927, when his tenure as Australian High Commissioner
in London ended. Included are a number
of group portraits taken at unidentified occasions usually featuring Sir Joseph
Cook and sometimes also Dame Mary Cook, photographs of unidentified individuals
(possibly relatives), photographs of unidentified houses and scenes, and
newspaper articles dating from 1909 to about 1922 concerning Joseph Cook’s
career.
Of note is a postcard photograph contained in item 1 featuring a portrait of
Joseph Cook with the caption ‘With hearty thanks Joseph Cook 9.6.13’, two weeks
before he was sworn in as Prime Minister.
