Summary heading
Function and purpose
This series contains seven magazine style publications
from Australia, Britain, United States of America and Europe, featuring
articles related to either Sir Joseph Cook, other dignitaries or significant
world events. Included is a copy of
‘The Sydney Bystander’ from 1914 featuring a photograph of Sir Joseph Cook, a
copy of ‘L’Illustration Journal Universel’ from 1919 reporting on the
Versailles Conference, an Atlantic Edition of the ‘Daily Mail’ featuring an
article on funeral services for Queen Alexandra in 1925, a copy of ‘The British
Australian and New Zealander’ from 1926 with an article on the launch of the
first “Seagull” (an Australian amphibian flying boat) at Southampton, the June
1927 edition of ‘The British Empire Review’ containing an article on Sir Joseph
Cook, a copy of ‘Life’ from 1948 with an instalment of Winston Churchill’s war
memoirs and a memorial edition to King George VI of ‘The Sphere’ from
1952.
It would appear that these publications were primarily collected by Sir
Joseph Cook until his death in July 1947 and thereafter by Dame Mary Cook and
other Cook family members.

Series history
In 1993 the Cook family donated Sir Joseph Cook papers,
including series M3795, to the National Archives of Australia. The collection was initially located at the
New South Wales Office of National Archives but was transferred to the National
Office of National Archives in Canberra in 2001.
Provenance
Series M3795 is part of the personal collection of former
Prime Minister Sir Joseph Cook, although contains two magazine publications
(items 6 and 7), which must have been accumulated by Cook’s wife, Dame Mary
Cook, or other family members as they date from after Sir Joseph’s death in
July 1947. The Cook family donated the
collection to the National Archives in 1993.
