Summary heading
Function and purpose
Series M3613 contains photographs of the christening,
launch and inaugural flight of the first Australian “Seagull”, an amphibian
flying boat built for Australia at the Southampton Supermarine Aviation
Works. The “Seagull’ was launched on 6
February 1926 at Southampton. Dame Mary Cook performed the christening ceremony
while Sir Joseph Cook, Australian High Commissioner to Britain at the time,
participated in the inaugural flight.
Included in the series is a boxed souvenir photograph album presented to
the Cooks by the Supermarine Aviation Works on the occasion of the launch.
Some photographs in the series were produced by Fox Photos, Fleet St, London
while others were taken by Sport and General Press Agency Ltd, London. These
photographs are annotated with numbering systems pertaining to the respective
agencies. As these numbering systems
were quite different, and some photographs were not numbered at all, a single
number control system [1] – [16] was imposed by National Archives.
