Summary heading

Function and purpose

Series M3612 contains press articles and cartoons from various Australian and overseas newspapers and publications accumulated by Sir Joseph Cook.  Often the sources of the clippings are unidentified, although some originate from The Sydney Morning Herald, The Times, The Daily Telegraph, The Worker, The Sporting and Dramatic News, The Bulletin, The British Australian and New Zealander, and the Sunday Mail.  Sometimes the clippings are undated, although it has been possible in most instances to estimate dates.  The series is primarily arranged chronologically by year, with items containing clippings from either one year or a span of years.

The political cartoons contained in the series depict prominent Australian politicians from the first two decades of the twentieth century such as Joseph Cook, Andrew Fisher, Sir John Forrest, George Houstoun Reid, William Lyne, Alfred Deakin, William Morris Hughes and King O’Malley, and generally comment on political events of the day.  Of significance, are cartoons concerning the protagonists in the ‘fusion’ between the Protectionists and Free Traders, which occurred in 1909 (item 3).

A number of newspaper articles in the series concern Joseph Cook himself, his political activities, his overseas trips, his Australian representative roles and his role as Australian High Commissioner to Britain, while others concern significant political and international events such as the visit to Australia by Lord Kitchener in 1910, the funeral of King Edward and World War One.

Also included in the series are articles regarding other members of the Cook family, particularly Sir Joseph’s wife, Dame Mary Cook.  Several of these focus on Dame Mary’s Red Cross activities.
