Function and purpose
This series comprises material concerning various honours bestowed on former
Prime Minister Sir Joseph Cook and his wife, Dame Mary Cook. Included are booklets concerning the ‘Most
Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George’ (the order of Sir
Joseph’s knighthood); certificates re royal commemorative medals for both Sir
Joseph and Dame Mary Cook; correspondence of Sir Joseph and Dame Mary’s son,
Justice RC Cook, concerning negotiations for a memorial to Sir Joseph Cook in
Canberra; a draft gazettal notice appointing Sir Joseph the Australian High
Commissioner in London; prints of, and documentation re, the painting ‘Some
Statesmen of the Great War’ by Sir James Guthrie; and examples of the 1972
postage stamp of Joseph Cook from the ‘Prime Ministers’ series of stamps.

Series history
In 1993 the Cook family donated Sir Joseph Cook papers,
including series M3583, to the National Archives of Australia. The collection was initially located at the
New South Wales Office of National Archives but was transferred to the National
Office of National Archives in Canberra in 2001.
Provenance
Series M3583 is part of the personal collection of former
Prime Minister Sir Joseph Cook, although also contains material regarding
Cook’s wife, Dame Mary Cook. The Cook
family donated the collection to the National Archives in 1993.
