Function and purpose

This series contains documents, invitations, newspaper clippings, photographs and calling cards accumulated by Sir Joseph and Dame Mary Cook primarily during Sir Joseph’s tenure as Australian High Commissioner in London from 1921 to 1927.  A couple of documents in the series date from before or after Cook’s time as High Commissioner.  Included is a copy of the ‘Votes and Proceedings of the House of Representatives’ for 11 November 1921, the day Cook’s appointment as High Commissioner was announced, along with the annual reports Cook prepared as High Commissioner for presentation to the Australian Parliament for the years 1922-26, and programmes for processions to British Parliament by King George V in 1922 and 1926.  Also included are details of Sir Joseph and Lady Mary Cook’s attendance at Princess Mary’s wedding in 1922 and photographs of the wedding presents from Australians in London, photographs of various official events and dignitaries, an invitation to attend the launch of the battleship “Australia”, and photographs and newspaper clippings of Australia Day celebrations in London in 1926.

Series history

In 1993 the Cook family donated Sir Joseph Cook papers, including series M3582, to the National Archives of Australia.  The collection was initially located at the New South Wales Office of National Archives but was transferred to the National Office of National Archives in Canberra in 2001.

Provenance

Series M3582 is part of the personal collection of former Prime Minister Sir Joseph Cook, although also contains material accumulated by Cook’s wife, Dame Mary Cook.  The Cook family donated the collection to the National Archives in 1993.
