Summary heading
Function and purpose
This series consists of seven folders of official papers and correspondence
maintained by Stanley Melbourne Bruce in London. Most items relate to his
position as Australian High Commissioner to Great Britain (1933-45), although
some concern his roles as Australian Minister in London (1932-33), Assistant
Treasurer (1932), and member of the Committee of Imperial Defence during the
1930s. The series largely consists of
inwards and outwards correspondence, primarily cablegrams. The subject matter
covered includes monetary problems, defence and World War Two matters, external
affairs and the exchange of such information between United Kingdom and
Dominion governments, trade and business, air communications and transport,
arrangements for Prime Minister Curtin’s visit to the United Kingdom in 1944
and personal representations to Bruce as Australian High Commissioner.

System of arrangement and control
As no system of arrangement and control was apparent, a
single number system has been imposed by National Archives. Also, it would seem that the files and their
contents are not arranged exactly as they were during active use.
