Function and purpose

Series M1141 contains material relating to the war service of Richard Gardiner Casey (later Baron Casey). The records cover the period from Casey’s enlistment in 1914 until his demobilisation in 1919 and include correspondence to his parents and brother and Casey’s war diaries. Additional items consist of: section orders and Routine Orders at Sea, memoranda, orders, battle instructions, training and instructional papers, maps, aerial photographs, booklets, and miscellaneous papers. Casey enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on 14 September 1914. Commissioned as a lieutenant he embarked for Egypt in October 1914, beginning his service as an orderly officer and then aide-de-camp to Major General (Sir) William Bridges, commander of the A.I.F.'s 1st Division. Casey’s correspondence with his parents and brother was sent from various locations and charts his initial involvement in World War I. Items include Casey’s: time on the troopship the HMAT Orvietto; notes on the battle between HMAS Sydney and SMS Emden at the Battle of Cocos; service with the 1st Australian Division; account of the shooting of Major General Bridges (NAA: M1141; ITEM 1A).
