Series note
This series primarily comprises letters from Frank Lidgett McDougall to Prime Minister Stanley Melbourne Bruce for the years 1924 to 1929. Some carbon copies of replies from Bruce to McDougall are also included. During this period, McDougall was in London representing the Commonwealth Development and Migration Commission and the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research. He was also a member of the Empire Marketing Board and was part-time secretary of the London agency of the Dried Fruits Control Board. He attended the Imperial Conference of 1923 and was involved in the Imperial Economic Committee in 1926. McDougall acted as an advisor to Prime Minister Bruce on matters relating to Imperial preference, trade and the marketing of Australian products and, using many contacts as sources of information, kept Bruce informed of events in Britain. The correspondence in M111 covers a wide range of topics including Empire trade and development, markets and marketing, Imperial preference, the stance of British political parties on Empire trade and preference, specific commodities especially dried fruit, wine and dairy products, Australian and British agricultural research and development, tariffs and duties, prices, trade with countries outside the British Empire, the economic position in Britain and Australia, migration and Empire settlement, reports of conversations with various British Members of Parliament and business leaders, the Empire Marketing Board, British delegations to Australia and Bruce's trip to England in 1926 for the Imperial Conference, the Development and Migration Commission, the Commonwealth Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the League of Nations and British political news. Some personal correspondence concerning McDougall's position and remuneration is also included as is some correspondence discussing the general election of October 1929 in which Bruce and the Nationalist Party lost power.
