Series M109 consists of a folder containing twenty-two separate month-based indexes to part of Stanley Melbourne Bruce's monthly war files (CRS M100).  The indexes cover the months September 1939 - June 1941 only, but are more detailed than a related index (CRS M102) for this period. However, it is CRS M102 and another series (CRS M101), which cover the entire period of the monthly war files (September 1939 - August 1945).  

The CRS M109 index is arranged in monthly sequences, with the general subject or surname of the correspondent listed alphabetically and the reference to the document number within the relevant monthly war file noted. Many of the subject headings have two or more sub-headings, providing further information about the nature of the subject covered. 

The number '17' appears on the front cover of the index.  The folder was originally last in a sequence of correspondence folders which are now controlled as CRS M104 'Folders of Annual Correspondence, 1926-1964'. However, as the index bore no relation to the other files and it appeared that the numbering sequence was not original, it has been registered as a distinct series.
