Series M104 comprises annual folders of correspondence, memoranda, speech notes, notes of interviews and reports covering Stanley Melbourne Bruce's positions as leader of the Australian delegation to the Ottawa Conference (1932), Australian Minister in London (1932-33), Australian High Commissioner in Britain (1933-45), Chairman of the World Food Council of the Food and Agriculture Organisation (1946-51) and Chairman of the British Finance Corporation for Industry (1947-57). Each folder is identified by a primary number, allocated for a year or period of years, while secondary numbers have been used to subdivide the files by subject. Each file contains a typed contents list inside the front cover.
The series covers a broad range of subjects including international trade and tariffs, Australian exports, Commonwealth ships, wireless communications, Australian war debt and loans, State-Federal financial relations, the Ottawa Agreement, League of Nations matters, Australian and Imperial defence, Abyssinia and sanctions against Italy, abdication of the King, world nutrition and agriculture, gifts from Kemal Ataturk, federal elections, the Empire Air Mail Scheme, civil aviation, aircraft manufacture in Australia, Imperial Conferences, World War II, Australian - American relations, the death of Prime Minister Joseph Lyons, Prime Minister R G Menzies' visit to England, post war reconstruction, and possible forms of future world organisation. As a number of files in the series were not titled, National Archives has imposed some file titles to reflect the subject matter contained.
It is possible that the numerical sequence of the files dates from 1967, when they were listed by Lord Bruce's Secretary prior to transfer. A few of the files are annotated as having been brought in 1965 from Lord Bruce's London flat, where many of his papers were kept after his retirement.
Folder No.17, containing a detailed subject and name index to Bruce's War Files (1939-1941) has been registered separately as CRS M109, Detailed Name and Subject Index to Monthly War Files, 1939-1941.
