K269 – Inward passenger manifests for ships and aircraft arriving at Fremantle, PerthAirport and Western Australian outports, chronological series

Function and purpose

This series comprises lists showing details of persons arriving at the port of Fremantle, PerthAirport and Western Australian outports, from interstate or from overseas. The series in this format ceased in December 1978, identification of the subsequent record series (if any) is subject to further investigation.

Copies for some of the lists, which have been printed on thermal paper, have been made for preservation reasons.

Using the series

The majority of the passenger lists in this series have been registered at item level on RecordSearch. These can be retrieved by a keyword search limited to reference number K269.

Microfilm copies of the K269 arrival records within the period from 1898 to 1963 were digitised under agreement by Ancestry.com.au, and have been loaded against the item where a pre-existing digitised copy of the original paper record was not present.

Physical characteristics

The lists are held in manila folders with the name of the ship or flight number, and date of arrival printed on the front covers. In some cases multiple copies of the list in different formats are found or the list was separated by the port at which the passengers intended to dis-embark. Occasionally temporary travel documents were also included.

System of arrangement and control

The passenger lists are held in chronological order by date of arrival in Western Australia. In some cases there is a yearly index of all ships and aircraft arrivals. There are also some items in this series located in the map and plan cabinets in area 10 for preservation reasons (K269/5). These items are significantly damaged and date of arrival and ship name is illegible. For this reason, control symbols [1] - [9] have been imposed on these items by the National Archives of Australia.

Relationships with other records

This series forms part of a large group of records that document the movement of people into and out of Western Australia comprising incoming and outgoing passenger lists, nominal rolls, crew lists and passenger cards.

Passenger lists for Western Australia were originally transferred to the Archives as a large number of individual accession series. For incoming passenger lists, the accession series were converted to one CRS K269, maintaining the original chronological order.

Nominal rolls, crew lists, outwards passenger lists and passenger cards remain as individual accession series, and in some cases form part of CRS K47. Consult the relevant series links for details.

Series history

Items from PP240/3 - Inward ships passenger manifests for outports, single number series and PP281/3 - Inward ships passenger manifests for outports, single number series were integrated into K269 which was completed mid 2009.
