K13 – Postal and Telegraph Conference, Adelaide 1890, chronological series
Function and purpose
This series is comprised of one bound gold embossed volume
that details the names of colonial delegates with verbatim report of the
proceedings of the Postal and Telegraph Conference that was held in Adelaide in May 1890. The
first pages of the book contain actual specimen copies of the different
denominations of the Postal Notes that were in use in the Province of South Australia
at the time.
Although Western Australia
and New Zealand
were not represented at the conference the proceedings provide an insight into
the process by which resolutions were met in regards to providing postal and
telegraph services. This volume is also a record of the intercontinental
communication problems that were discussed at the conference.

This volume measures 32.5mm x 20mm x 1.25mm.
The first few pages contain a signature and a date
(21/1/’65?) and a handwritten short message to Mr
Squire dated 1890.

Series history
This item was previously PP187/7 – Postmaster General’s
Department, Personnel records – Postal and Telegraph Conference, Adelaide, May 1890 and
was converted to K13 in 1985.
Provenance
The major part of the originating accession (PP187) was
developed by the Colonial Post Office during the pre-Federation period of the
Colony of Western Australia. The records were retained in the custody of the
Commonwealth Postmaster General’s Department when that activity became a
Federal instrumentality and until passed to the Commonwealth Archives for retention
were continuously in the custody of the Postmaster General’s Department.
