This series comprises cards showing all details of payments made to soldiers and their allotees during service. The cards WF3 (and WF3H a revised WF3) were created in command pay office at time of enlistment and maintained there throughout service. On embarkation for overseas a card WF3A accompanied the soldier to his overseas station and was maintained by the Command Paymaster at the overseas post. A photostat copy was also made and forwarded to the overseas CPM by another route, thus in the event of the transport being sunk with loss of pay records an alternative means of check was available. The WF3A was maintained overseas until embarkation for return to Australia when it was again photostated and the card and photostat forwarded to the CPM in command of enlistment by different routes.
When a soldier was taken prisoner of war or posted missing, action was taken to forward his WF3A and photostats to the CPM London who was responsible for pay records of all POWs etc. Locally, the cards where removed and separate members folders where made up for all POW's. These are held in consignment two of this series.
The allotment ledger WF45 was maintained at all times by CPM in command of enlistment. Each card has over 40 columns but the basic information which appears on all cards is soldiers names, army number, rank, unit, pay book number, schedule of daily rate of pay.
The system of control is single number which is actually the servicemens' service number with 'WX' prefix, 'W' denoting Western Australian enlistment, and 'X' denoting service overseas.
