This series consists of a collection of photographs which were assembled by the former Australia Post Museum from a range of official and unofficial sources.
The photographs were arranged in geographic and subject order and seqeuntially numbered by museum volunteer workers. Some items were unnumbered but Australia Post added control numbers prior to transferring the records to National Archives.
These items were given prefixes according to the size of the photograph (eg XL for extra large items, SS for small snapshots) and a separate numerical sequence with each prefix.
The photographs document mostly South Australian and Northern Territory postal activities with extensive coverage of particular post offices.
They represent a historical record of some aspects of postal services and post offices.
Gaps in the numerical sequence in Archives custody may indicate duplicate (often inferior) copies or those which have been assessed as having no historical merit perhaps because of quality or content.
The photographs have been arranged in consignments of similar size to allow for suitable packaging and are in both colour and black and white. The wherebouts of negatives is unknown.
The photographs have been repackaged in archival albums which have been given single number/consignment number control symbols. For example: ALBUM 1/1, 2/1, 3/1 etc. for ALBUM 1 of consignment 1, ALBUM 2 of consignment 1 etc.
