Items medium note
This series consists of bound volumes that contain form P2 - Passenger lists for incoming passengers arriving at Port Adelaide.
The National Archives of Australia has imposed a single number control system on the volumes, which are arranged in chronological order. A typed contents list is located inside the front cover of each volume and provides in alphabetical order the names and arrival dates of the ships.
Microfilm copies of the volumes are available for reference purposes. The double-sided form is structured into five sections. Not all sections are completed.
The first section relates to the ship and provides details on the name of the ship, its official number, port of registry, steam ship line to which it belongs, the master's name, tonnage of the ship, date of arrival at port and where the voyage commenced and finished.
The second section is titled "Names and descriptions of passengers" with the section ruled into columns and while over time the titles varied, they included: Port where embarked, name, class, profession, male or female, age, married or single, country of last permanent residence, Nationality (British or Alien, race (country of birth)), country of intended future permanent residence, purpose of journey; intended length of stay in Australia, period since last in Australia and remarks. Passengers were grouped together according to the class of fare upon which they travelled (first, second or third class).
The third and fourth sections of the form record information on any births or deaths that occurred during the voyage. For the section on births the information recorded is name, sex, name of parents and nationality while for deaths the information recorded is name, sex, age, occupation, nationality and cause of death.Titled "Summary of passengers", the fifth section provides the statistical information of the voyage. It records the total number of males or females in the following categories: adults, children 0 to 12 and infants.
Please note that the ESPERANCE BAY which arrived on 6 September 1948 is in the Register and on the microfilm as arriving 6 September 1949. Two dates appear on the passenger 6 September 1948 and 6 September 1949. The correct date is 6 September 1948.
