These pre-Federation docket correspondence files were created by the Collector of Customs at Port Adelaide and were forwarded, as enclosures, to the South Australian Audit Office. On 23 July 1941 the agency returned these files to the Collector.
The dockets are concerned with such matters as cash deficiencies, expenditure, treaty with Uraguay, composition of colonial beer, method of sealing stores, distillation licences, consular fees, staff
classification list etc. The folded docket file covers contain the following identifying details: file number, agency name (i.e. "Her Majesty's Customs, Port Adelaide"), date the docket was opened, subject matter, from whom the correspondence was received, enclosures and file notes. These records have been retained permanently and are considered to have some historical significance because of their pre-Federation date range and their paucity.
There are no control records extant for this series.
