This series consists of correspondence concerning claims made for the supplementation of funeral benefits made on behalf of deceased men who fought in the South African campaign (Boer War). Boer War veterans' were able to apply for limited medical benefits as well as a subsidy on their funeral expenses.
These files were raised in Adelaide by the Deputy Commissioner of Repatriation. The papers in this series consist of letters from next-of-kin, undertakers, the Registrar of Probate and other interested parties such as the Returned Soldiers' League relating to the deceased veteran's estate and his eligibility for funeral benefits. Other material on the files cover such matters as invoices from undertakers, applications for grants toward funeral and burial expenses, record of evidence in respect of claim for pension and summaries of war pension cases submitted to the Repatriation Commission. Medical reports are also included on some of these files.
The creation and termination of this records series has been estimated by the date range of the individual items in it. All the extant files have an opening date of 1939 and the last date of action on one of the files is 1960. The files which are numbered BW1 to BW74 are all in the custody of the Australian Archives in South Australia. Further files from this record series have not been located in this state.
The papers in this series were maintained in manilla folders. The files have the surname, first name, regimental number, rank and unit handwritten in ink on the front cover. The file number is handwritten in ink on the top right hand corner or across the bottom and the word "DECEASED" is also stamped on the front cover.
These files have been retained permanently as a whole because of their scarcity as well as their value in documenting the history of the South African War.
