Function and purpose
The records in this series were created by the Quarantine
Office at Port Adelaide South Australia to document the quarantine functions
performed which included the active quarantine of passengers and vessels at the
Torrens Island Quarantine station as well as the sanitary inspection of ships
crew accommodation undertaken by the Medical Officer.

The records contain information on vessels and passengers
placed under active quarantine at the Torrens Island Quarantine Station. The
Vessels quarantined were the Woodward in1929, Narkunda in 1930, Themistocles
and Straithaird in1938. Only the file relating to the quarantine of the
Strathaird contains the form Q312 personal details card for persons
quarantined.
There is also information regarding the notification of
infectious and non venereal diseases reported on vessels arriving at Port
Adelaide, which, include Scarlet Fever, Diphtheria, Typhoid Fever, Whooping
Cough, Varicella, smallpox, tuberculosis, malaria, leprosy and Berri Berri.
Notification was also received on typhus like cases reported in Adelaide and of
outbreaks of contagious diseases in overseas countries. The diseases include
the plague, smallpox, varicella and cholera.
The survey form titled M & A-B Report of Medical
Inspector - Crew Accommodation provides information on the officer’s
accommodation, engine room and stokehole ventilation and seamen’s
accommodation. The information includes the name of the vessel, port of
registry, trade in which engaged, usual time occupied on longest run between
ports, gross tonnage, net tonnage, year built, total, crew, port at work
inspection made and date of inspection as well as the number of officers,
engineers and crew, size of cabins and other accommodation including any
alterations and additions required.
