This series relates to files created by the Navigation Section. The  files relate to matters dealt with under the Navigation Act and regulations and cover such matters as the safety of ships, regulation of coasting trade provisions, survey of ships, storage of cargo, examination for certificates, health requirements, shipping casualties, wrecks and salvage, applications forlicences etc.
The correspondence is kept between manilla covers and is secured with paper binders. The file number, its title as well as
reference to the previous and subsequent file numbers are included on the front cover.
The basic arrangement of this, record series is by annual single number with the alpha prefix "NS". However, there also appears to have been a practise of using a part of the file number for the same topic from one year to the next with only the year prefix being changed. This arrangement is not consistent throughout the  series. Occasionally the "NS" prefix is also omitted from the file number.
 
D1911 was relocated from South Australia to the ACT in November 2021.
