Description of series:
Typescript, processed, manuscript and printed submissions,
statements, correspondence, bulletins, statistical data etc. placed before the Royal Commission as evidence. The exhibits are numbered and arranged in numerical order. (For details, see attached list).
History Prior/Subsequent to Transfer:
Prior to transfer: Series 5 and 6 evidently formed one series originally in which confidential and non confidential exhibits were mixed. The Commissioners - G. W. Paton (Chairman), R. G. Osborne, C. B. Bednall R. C. Wilson, N. T. Young and M. C. Foxton (K. Collings Secretary) - were appointed on the 11th Feb. 1953 and held their first meeting in Melbourne on the 23rd of the same month. The first of the 34 public sittings, which were held in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth and Hobart for the purpose of taking evidence began in Melbourne on 11th Mar. 1953. The report was authorised to be printed on the 13th Nov. and was signed on the 20th Feb. 1954. The records of the Commission were then delivered into the custody of PM's Department, where they remained until transferred to Archives Division on the 1st Nov. 1955.
