Description of series:
This is a compound series classified into two main groups: (1) Miscellaneous files; and (2) Correspondence files. The first group contains files relating to a variety of matters such as housekeeping, staff, arrangements for travel and accommodation and reporting service, etc. The group also includes information files eg; copies of Acts, press cuttings and releases, terms of reference of the
Commission, and evidence of persons who did not appear before the Commission etc. The second group consists of correspondence files and is classified into sub-groups according to the State in which the correspondent resides. Thus, files 53/201-281 contain correspondence in NSW, 53/301-359, between the Commission and correspondents in Vic, 53/401-413, Qld, 53/501-522 SA, 53/601-611 WA, 53/701-707 Tas. History Prior/Subsequent to Transfer:
Prior to transfer: The Commissioners - G. W. Paton (Chairman) R. G. Osborne, C. B. Bednall R. C. Wilson, H. T. Young and M. C. Foxton (K. Collings Secretary) - were appointed on the 11th February, 1953, and held their first meeting in Melbourne on the 23rd of the same month. The first of the 34 public sittings which were held in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth and hobart for the purpose of taking evidence began in Melbourne on the 11th March, 1953. The report was authorised to be printed on the 13th November and was signed on the 20th February, 1954. The records of the Commission were then delivered into the custody of Prime Minister's Department where they remained until transferred to Archives Division on the 1st November, 1955.
